Madrid, 1 September 1994. The son of a rally legend, Carlos Sainz Jr. was born into motorsport royalty but carved his own path through the junior categories, winning the Formula Renault 3.5 Series title in 2014. He entered Formula One with Toro Rosso in 2015, and over a decade has driven for five teams—Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and now Williams. His four Grand Prix victories, including a memorable win at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix just weeks after undergoing appendix surgery, have established him as one of the grid’s most adaptable and resilient talents. Without a championship to his name, Sainz remains a consistent front-runner: 29 podiums, five poles, and a reputation as a driver who extracts the maximum from whatever machinery he is given.

The story
Early life
Carlos Sainz Vázquez de Castro was born on 1 September 1994 in Madrid, Spain, to Reyes Vázquez de Castro and Carlos Sainz, a rally driver who won the World Rally Championship twice. His father mentored him throughout his journey to Formula One. Sainz began karting in 2006, guided by his father and the passion for racing sparked by visiting circuits as a child. He finished third in the Torneo Industrie de Minikarts that year. By 2008, at age 14, he won the Asia-Pacific KF3 title and was runner-up in the Spanish KF3 Championship. In 2009, he won the prestigious Monaco Kart Cup Junior, finished second in both the European KF3 Championship and the Spanish KF3 Championship, and entered the Red Bull Junior Team. In 2016, Sainz was named Ambassador of María de Villota’s Legacy, having been coached by her at a driving school in Madrid. He has spoken about being personally affected by her death in 2013 and has kept a star on his helmet since 2014 in her honor.
Path to F1
Carlos Sainz Jr. began his karting career in 2006, guided by his father, the two-time World Rally Champion. Success came quickly: in 2008, at 14, he won the Asia-Pacific KF3 title and was runner-up in the Spanish KF3 Championship. The following year, he won the Monaco Kart Cup Junior and again finished second in both the European and Spanish KF3 championships, earning a place in the Red Bull Junior Team.
Sainz moved to single-seaters in 2010 at age 15, racing in Formula BMW Europe with EuroInternational. He won the rookie of the year award and finished fourth in the championship, while also taking three victories in the Asia-Pacific series. In 2011, he finished second in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with ten podiums and won the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup with ten victories, becoming the youngest champion in the series’ history.
After a stint in Formula 3, where he finished fifth in the European championship in 2012, he moved to GP3 Series in 2013 with limited success. However, his concurrent appearances in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series earned him a full seat with DAMS for 2014. That season, every one of his seven podiums was a victory, securing him the championship by 39 points over Pierre Gasly and opening the door to Formula One.
F1 career
Carlos Sainz arrived in Formula 1 in 2015 with Toro Rosso, the first step of a career that would take him through five teams without ever winning a championship. Over 236 Grands Prix, he scored four wins, 29 podiums, and five poles. His breakthrough came at McLaren, where he finished sixth in 2020 and earned a seat at Ferrari. At Maranello from 2021 to 2024, he won three races—including a memorable victory at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, the only non-Red Bull win that season—and finished fifth in the drivers’ standings twice. A move to Williams followed in 2025. Sainz’s path—Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, Williams—traces a steady upward arc, but his four career victories and consistent points finishes mark him as a reliable top-tier driver rather than a perennial contender. He never led a title fight, yet his resilience across team changes and his ability to extract results from midfield machinery defined his F1 career.
Peak years
Personal life
Sainz dated fellow Spaniard Isabel Hernáez from 2017 until 2023. As of 2024, he is in a relationship with Scottish model Rebecca Donaldson. He has split his time between residences in Madrid and London, and also maintains a home in Monaco. A lifelong Madrid native, Sainz is a fanatical supporter of Real Madrid; he went viral during the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend for refusing to autograph a Barcelona shirt. His personal car collection reflects his tenure at the Scuderia, including a Ferrari F8 Tributo, 812 Competizione, and Daytona SP3. In 2023, while in Milan, he was robbed of a Richard Mille watch valued at an estimated €315,000. Rather than flee, he chased down and captured his assailant.
Legacy
Carlos Sainz’s four Grand Prix victories and 29 podiums place him among the most consistent winners of his generation, yet his legacy may ultimately be defined by what he did not do: win a world championship. In an era dominated by Verstappen, Hamilton, and the resurgence of McLaren, Sainz has been the reliable number two at Ferrari and Williams, a driver capable of winning on any given Sunday but rarely over a full season. His five poles and four fastest laps, spread across three teams, underscore a career of competence rather than dominance. Still, his influence reaches beyond statistics. As the son of a World Rally champion, he carries a lineage of Spanish motorsport that connects the gravel stages to the asphalt of F1. Younger drivers, particularly those emerging from the Red Bull Junior program, cite his methodical approach and resilience as a benchmark. No circuit or trophy bears his name, and his place in the pantheon of Spanish drivers sits behind Fernando Alonso. But in an era of hyper-specialization, Sainz stands as a reminder that a career built on consistency, adaptability, and quiet professionalism can still command respect.
