The story

He was born in Monte Carlo, the son of a former Formula 3 driver and a hairdresser, but Charles Leclerc’s path to Ferrari was forged in grief. His father, Hervé, died of a long illness in 2017, four days before Leclerc won a Formula 2 feature race in Baku. It was a lie—that he had already signed an F1 contract—that gave his father peace in his final days. The truth came later: a seat at Sauber in 2018, then a promotion to Ferrari in 2019, where he became the team’s standard-bearer. By the end of the 2026 season, Leclerc had amassed 8 wins, 24 poles, and 52 podiums across 177 Grands Prix, finishing as runner-up in the 2022 championship. He is, by any measure, the most successful Monégasque driver in history.

Early life

Monte Carlo, 16 October 1997. Charles Marc Hervé Perceval Leclerc was born into a family where racing was a thread through generations. His father, Hervé, had competed in Formula Three in the 1980s and 1990s; his mother, Pascale, ran a hair salon in Fontvieille. A step-grandfather had founded the Novares Group, a manufacturing company that helped cover incidental costs during Leclerc’s karting years, though not the racing itself. He studied at the Lycée Albert Premier in Monaco-Ville.

The family’s connection to the sport ran deeper. His older maternal half-brother, Lorenzo Tolotta-Leclerc, was best friends with Jules Bianchi—Leclerc’s godfather and kart mechanic until Bianchi’s death in 2015. His younger brother, Arthur, would also become a racing driver. Tragedy struck in 2017: Hervé died after a long illness, aged 54, four days before Leclerc won the feature race at the Baku Formula 2 round. Before his death, Leclerc had lied to his father, telling him he had signed a Formula One contract for that season; he signed with Sauber later that year.

Path to F1

Charles Leclerc’s path to Formula 1 was shaped by karting success, a family tragedy, and a rapid ascent through the junior categories. He won the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship in 2011, then moved to single-seaters, claiming the GP3 Series title as a rookie in 2016 with ART Grand Prix. The following year, he dominated the FIA Formula 2 Championship, also as a debutant, winning seven races and the championship. Four days before his feature race victory at the Baku round that season, his father Hervé died after a long illness. Before his death, Leclerc had lied to his father that he had signed a Formula One contract for that year; he signed with Sauber later in 2017.

The lie became reality. Leclerc made his F1 debut with Sauber in 2018, impressing enough to earn a promotion to Ferrari for 2019. His younger brother Arthur is also a racing driver, and his older half-brother Lorenzo was best friends with Jules Bianchi, Leclerc’s godfather until Bianchi’s death in 2015.

F1 career

Born in Monte Carlo in 1997, Charles Leclerc entered Formula 1 in 2018 with Sauber, a team then in the midfield. His rookie season was a quiet showcase of raw pace, scoring points in nine of twenty-one races and finishing 13th overall. That performance earned him a promotion to Ferrari for 2019, making him the first Monegasque driver to race for the Scuderia in over half a century. In his second season with the team, he took his first win at Spa-Francorchamps and followed it with a victory at Monza, becoming the first driver to win at Ferrari’s home circuit since Fernando Alonso in 2010.

Leclerc’s career arc peaked in 2022, when he finished runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship behind Max Verstappen. That season he claimed three wins and nine poles, leading the championship early before a series of reliability issues and strategic errors eroded his challenge. He finished third in 2024, adding another win to his tally. Across nine seasons and 177 starts, Leclerc has accumulated 24 poles, 52 podiums, and eight wins, all with Ferrari. He remains with the team through 2026, the last season in the current regulatory cycle, as the sport’s most successful driver never to have won a world title.

Personal life

By the time he married Alexandra Saint Mleux in a private civil ceremony in Monaco-Ville on 28 February 2026, Leclerc had already made clear that his life outside the cockpit is deliberately curated. The couple, who began their relationship in 2023 and announced their engagement the previous November, drove away from the ceremony in a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR. Saint Mleux, a French-born influencer and former art historian, has been a fixture at races since their first public appearance together at Wimbledon in 2023. Leclerc’s previous relationships—with Italian model Giada Gianni (2015–2019) and Monegasque architect Charlotte Siné (2019–2022)—were also public, but he has described his need to compartmentalize personal life from professional ambition. He is trilingual in French, Italian, and English, and outside racing his interests include architecture, music, and fashion. He chose the number 16 because its digits sum to his lucky number, 7, and it matches his birth date. In 2024 he purchased a condominium in Miami and became a torchbearer for the Monégasque leg of the Summer Olympics. He owns a collection of Ferrari road cars and took delivery of a Riva yacht in 2026. He has been described as a national hero of Monaco, particularly after winning his home Grand Prix in 2024.

Legacy

By the time he climbed out of the Ferrari at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Leclerc had done something no Monegasque driver had done in 93 years: win his home race. That victory, combined with his 2022 championship runner-up finish and 24 career poles, cemented a legacy built on raw, one-lap speed. He holds the record for most pole positions without a world title, a statistic that speaks both to his qualifying genius and Ferrari’s recurring inability to convert that pace into sustained championship campaigns. His eight wins across nine seasons place him among the most successful drivers never to win a title, though his 52 podiums from 177 starts show consistency. Off the track, his influence is measured in national pride: in 2020, the National Council of Monaco awarded him the Medal of Honour, with its president noting the council “could not have dreamed of a better recipient.” He is widely described as a national hero, a status reinforced by his 2024 home win. His 16 remains a permanent number now synonymous with Ferrari’s modern era, and his driving style—aggressive, precise, occasionally reckless—has drawn comparisons to the late Ayrton Senna, whom Leclerc cites as his inspiration.
