Biography

The story

Hasselt, Belgium, 1997. The son of a former Formula One driver and a karting champion, Max Verstappen was raised not in the Netherlands, but on the Dutch border, a geographic limbo that shaped his identity. By the time he turned 17, he had already won the world karting championship and tested a Formula One car. He would spend only one full season in junior single-seaters before Toro Rosso handed him a race seat in 2015, making him the youngest driver in F1 history. A promotion to Red Bull the following year produced an immediate victory on debut in Spain. By 2021, he had broken the Mercedes stranglehold on the world championship. Four consecutive titles later, Verstappen has amassed 71 wins, 51 poles, and a statistical peak that places him among the most dominant drivers the sport has seen.

Early life

Max Emilian Verstappen was born on 30 September 1997 in Hasselt, Belgium, to Jos Verstappen, a Dutch former Formula One driver, and Sophie Kumpen, a Belgian karting competitor. His parents separated when he was young; Max lived with his father, while his younger sister, Victoria, lived with their mother. He also has three younger half-siblings from his father’s subsequent marriages. Motorsport runs deep in the family: his first cousin once removed, Anthony Kumpen, is a two-time NASCAR Whelen Euro Series champion.

Verstappen began karting at the age of four, racing for the first time that year. He started competing professionally in 2005, winning his first local championship. He attended a secondary school in Maaseik, a Belgian town on the Dutch border, before switching to private tutoring. He admitted he often left class early to travel across Europe with his father for races. By 2013, he had become one of the sport’s top competitors, winning multiple Dutch, Belgian, European, and world karting titles, including the 2013 KZ world championship, karting’s highest category.

Path to F1

By the time he was 15, Max Verstappen had already won the highest category of world karting, the KZ1 championship, at Varennes-sur-Allier in 2013. It was the culmination of a decade of dominance: he started racing karts at age four, won his first local championship in 2005, and by 2008, at 11, had taken 11 of 12 races in the Belgian Cadete class. He accumulated trophies in Dutch, Belgian, European, and world championships, winning six of the eight karting titles he contested.

His transition to single-seaters began in October 2013, just after his 16th birthday. He completed 160 laps in a Manor Motorsport car at Pembrey, then tested a Dallara F311 with Motopark Academy at Jerez. In January 2014, he joined the Florida Winter Series before signing with Van Amersfoort Racing for the FIA European Formula 3 championship. That season, he won ten races—including six consecutively, a record—and finished third overall behind Esteban Ocon and Tom Blomqvist. He also impressed at the Macau Grand Prix, charging from 24th to seventh and setting the fastest lap. His raw pace and consistency earned him the 2014 Talent of the Year award, and by the end of that year, Toro Rosso had signed him for 2015.

F1 career

He arrived in Formula 1 at seventeen, a raw talent with 23 car races behind him, and within three years he was the youngest driver ever to start a Grand Prix, win one, and lead a World Championship. Verstappen’s career has been a single, unbroken arc with Red Bull—first Toro Rosso for a season, then the senior team from the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, where he won on debut. Over twelve seasons and 237 starts, he has amassed 71 wins, 127 podiums, 51 poles, and 37 fastest laps. His four consecutive drivers’ titles from 2021 to 2024 placed him alongside Prost, Fangio, and Schumacher in the sport’s most exclusive company. The 2021 championship was decided on the final lap of the final race in Abu Dhabi, a controversial climax that ended Mercedes’ eight-year hold on the crown. The three that followed were statements of dominance: 15 wins in 2022, 19 in 2023, and nine in a more competitive 2024. By the time he finished runner-up in 2025, Verstappen had established himself as the defining driver of his generation—not merely for the numbers, but for the aggressive, late-braking, wheel-to-wheel style that became his signature.

Peak years

By the time the 2021 season reached its final lap in Abu Dhabi, Max Verstappen had already won ten Grands Prix that year, more than any other driver on the grid. But the four-season peak that followed was something else entirely. From 2022 through 2024, Verstappen won 50 of 66 races, a win rate of 75.8 percent. He took 36 poles and 27 fastest laps. His three consecutive championships—2022, 2023, and 2024—came with margins of 146, 290, and 63 points over his nearest rival. In 2023 alone, he won 19 of 22 rounds, breaking the single-season record for victories. The numbers are stark: 52 wins across those four title seasons, 99 podiums, and a run of dominance that placed him alongside the sport’s most formidable champions. His 2025 season ended in second place, breaking the streak, but the peak had already been defined.

Personal life

He moved to Monaco in October 2015, joining a colony of drivers that includes Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo. Verstappen holds dual Dutch and Belgian citizenship but chose to race under the Dutch flag. “I was raised as a Dutch person and that’s how I feel,” he explained in 2015, adding that he “only lived in Belgium to sleep.” Since October 2020, Verstappen has been in a relationship with Brazilian-Dutch model Kelly Piquet, daughter of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet. He became stepfather to her daughter, Penélope, from a previous relationship. In April 2025, the couple had their first child together, a daughter named Lily. Outside the paddock, Verstappen streams sim racing on Twitch with Team Redline and is a known enthusiast of Bengal cats, owning three named Jimmy, Sassy, and Donatello. He supports PSV Eindhoven, a club his father introduced him to, and since his relationship with Piquet, he has also adopted Brazilian club Vasco da Gama.

Legacy

By the time he secured his fourth consecutive drivers’ title in 2024, Verstappen had already rewritten the statistical benchmarks for a generation. His 71 wins from 237 starts place him fourth on the all‑time victory list, and his 51 poles and 37 fastest laps underscore a period of near‑total dominance across the 2021–2024 seasons. In 2022 he won a record 15 Grands Prix in a single season, a mark he broke again in 2023 with 19 victories from 22 rounds. The Dutch government recognised his achievements in September 2022 by appointing him an Officer of the Order of Orange‑Nassau, and he received the Lorenzo Bandini Trophy and Dutch Sportsman of the Year award in 2016. His aggressive, late‑braking style and refusal to cede track position have influenced a wave of younger drivers coming through the junior categories, and his name is now routinely cited in debates about the sport’s all‑time greats. Whether that legacy will be defined by the raw numbers or by the manner in which he won them remains an open question, but the numbers themselves are already indelible.
