Monterrey, Mexico, 1991. Esteban Gutiérrez was the second of five children, born into a family that would see him leave home as a teenager to chase a path to Formula One. By the time he arrived in F1 with Sauber in 2013, he had already proven his mettle in the junior categories, winning both the Formula BMW Europe championship in 2008 and the GP3 Series title in 2010. Over three seasons and 59 Grands Prix, he raced for Sauber and the new Haas F1 Team, scoring a single fastest lap but no podiums or wins. His career in the top tier ended after 2016, though he continued his motorsport journey in Formula E and IndyCar. Today, he works as a brand ambassador and reserve driver for Mercedes-Benz in both Formula 1 and Formula E.

Biography
The story
Early life
Esteban Gutiérrez was born in Monterrey, Mexico, on August 5, 1991, the second of four brothers and one sister. He began racing karts in 2004 at the age of 13, quickly advancing through the Rotax Max Challenge to reach its world final in Malaysia in 2005. The following year, he dominated the Camkart Challenge Mexico, winning all five races, while also competing in the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge and finishing fourth in the Gran Nacional Mexicano in Zacatecas.
Just three years after first climbing into a kart, Gutiérrez left Mexico for the United States to make the jump to single-seaters, driven by the ambition to reach Formula One.
Path to F1
Gutiérrez began karting in 2004 at the age of 13, advancing to the world final of the Rotax Max Challenge in Malaysia the following year. In 2006, he won all five races in the Camkart Challenge Mexico and finished fourth in the Gran Nacional Mexicano. Just three years after entering motorsport, he left Mexico for the United States to make the jump to single-seaters. That move paid off quickly: in 2008 he won the Formula BMW Europe championship, and in 2010 he took the GP3 Series title. Those results, combined with support from the Escudería Telmex program, put him on the radar of the Sauber F1 team, where he became a test and reserve driver in 2011 before earning a race seat for 2013.
F1 career
Esteban Gutiérrez’s Formula 1 career spanned 59 starts across three seasons, split between two teams at opposite ends of the grid’s hierarchy. He made his debut in 2013 with Sauber, the Swiss team that had nurtured his path through the junior categories. The 2013 season was a steep learning curve: Gutiérrez scored no points, his best finish a 7th place in Japan that came only after a string of retirements ahead of him. He returned with Sauber in 2014, but the team’s C33 was uncompetitive, and he again failed to score a point. His single fastest lap – set at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix – was the only statistical flash of outright pace. After a year on the sidelines, Gutiérrez was signed by the new Haas F1 Team for its inaugural 2016 campaign. The American outfit’s Ferrari-linked car was more reliable than Sauber’s, and he scored points twice: 11th in Austria and 11th in Singapore. He finished the season with no podium, no pole, and no win, and was not retained for 2017. Gutiérrez left F1 with a reputation as a solid, if unspectacular, driver who never quite translated his junior championship success to the top category.
Peak years
Personal life
Born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, on August 5, 1991, Gutiérrez grew up as the second of four brothers and one sister. Though his early life was rooted in Mexico, his pursuit of a Formula 1 career eventually led him abroad. He now resides in London, a common base for drivers navigating the European-centered racing calendar. Details about his personal relationships and private life remain largely out of the public record.
After F1
After his final Formula One season in 2016, Gutiérrez did not leave the cockpit entirely. He moved to the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship, racing for the Techeetah team during the 2016–17 season. A parallel career in the North American IndyCar Series followed, where he drove for Dale Coyne Racing in 2017, including a start at the Indianapolis 500. By 2018, Gutiérrez had shifted from competitor to brand ambassador and development driver. He became an ambassador for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and took on the role of reserve and development driver for the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team. In the business sphere, he co-founded the sports management and marketing company R8G, which represents drivers and manages commercial partnerships. He currently resides in London, balancing his commercial ventures with his ambassadorial duties in the Mercedes ecosystem.
Where now
Esteban Gutiérrez no longer competes full-time in any major single-seater series, but he remains deeply embedded in the Formula 1 ecosystem. He lives in London and serves as an ambassador for the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team, representing the squad at events and promotional activities. Simultaneously, he works as a reserve and development driver for the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team, assisting with testing and car development. Though his driving career ended after 59 Grands Prix without a podium, his transition into these dual roles keeps him connected to the engineering and strategy sides of top-tier motorsport.
Legacy
Gutiérrez’s Formula 1 record is modest—59 starts, no podiums, no wins—but his path to the top tier remains a notable footnote in Mexican motorsport. He was the first Mexican driver to compete in F1 since Héctor Rebaque in 1981, and his GP3 Series title in 2010, along with the Formula BMW Europe crown in 2008, marked him as a promising graduate from the junior ladder. His single fastest lap, set at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix for Sauber, stands as his lone statistical highlight in the championship. Away from the cockpit, Gutiérrez transitioned into a development and ambassador role for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, a position that keeps him connected to the sport’s engineering and strategy side. He has also served as a reserve and development driver for the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E team. His career, while brief, helped re-establish a Mexican presence in Formula 1 after a three-decade gap, and his subsequent work within Mercedes’ structure has given him a quieter but sustained influence on the modern grid.
